Your entire visible fingernail is dead, matter of fact. The live part of it, the matrix- is located behind the cuticle, out of sight for the most part. If you look at the nail base of your thumb, you can catch a glimpse of it- that's the whitish crescent you see there. The white spot on your nail is the result of an injury to the nail while it was being formed most often- a bang or something you didn't even notice much. But it was enough to separate the little cells a bit, create a tiny gap in the nail that was being formed at the time. You can also do the same thing to the nail after it grows out to where you can see it. The injury doesn't have to be major- just enough to split apart a bit of the layers that make up your nail. Now, since you were able to peel off a bit of the nail itself, you actually thinned out and damaged the nail even more. It's thinner in that spot now, and more likely to be injured or split more when it grows out closer to the tip. You might also have a problem with thin nails if you tend to keep them coated with nail polish or have acrylic nails put on. The chemicals in those, as well as the chemicals used to take it all off, remove some of the nail and damage other spots. And your nail bed doesn't breathe well through all that stuff either. That can set you up for a nasty fungus infection, and those are hard to get rid of sometimes. Without actually seeing the overall condition of all your nails, it's hard to say exactly what has put the spots on your nails- but injury and chemicals are the leading culprits. It's not from eating too much calcium, though. Matter of fact, not enough calcium would be more likely, that and protein are what make up the nails. They are specialized extension of bone, made up of pretty much the same stuff. If yours are weakly, thin and easy broken, you can adjust the diet to provide more of both calcium and protein to improve matters. The oldest trick is to drink soluble gelatine- jello or knox gelatine either one will do. It takes a bit for it to show improvement, as nails take a while to grow with the added bennies, but within a couple months you should see it.What does it mean when you have white spots under your nails....i have alot of little spots on my fingernails
Not enough propper nutrition. Taking a daily vitamin should help this, over a little bit of time that is. Cannot expect anything in a day. Also, drinking more milk, or adding milk to your diet will help too. Good luck! Used to have same problem, and doctor said this helped.
vitamin deficiency

or fungus
It is brittle nails and it can also be a bruised nail when you bruise your nail it leaves a white mark on your nail .and if the white mark peels it just means you have brittle nails you can get a clear nail polish and use as directed
I think I heard that it was lack of calcium... I'm probably wrong though, so don't trust me.
some people say it is mean you are going to get some gifts!
Too much ? I heard that they were caused by eating too little calcium.

And there is the old wives tail that they are caused by telling lies. . . .
not enough calcium
In most cases this is due to a zinc deficiency or injuries to the nail bed. It can however also be indicative of certain internal problems such as arthritis, or from poisoning.
I think it's from calcium deficiency.
